The first veg boxes ready to go

A little after one o’clock yesterday afternoon Samson our Dartmoor-Welsh pony took a small plod into history as he faithfully delivered Chagford Community Agriculture’s very first veg-boxes to the town’s residents. Today is the culmination of a two-year long journey which has brought local, ecologically-produced fresh vegetables to CCA members, and a wry smile to the faces of many locals!

Despite the cold, dry spring our field has managed to produce a fine variety and quality of produce, on which we are proud to stake our reputation. Samson’s inaugural delivery was accompanied by encouraging comments from our first customers and whoops of excitement from the lovely ladies at the Courtyard café (directed, it should be said, primarily at Samson).

While we allow ourselves a moment to enjoy the pride that comes from a job well done, we hope that everybody who has helped us come this far also recognises the role they have played in turning Chagfood from a dream into reality- we couldn’t have done it without you!

Samson pulls the boxes into Chagford

We returned to the field yesterday content that we had achieved our first goal and relieved that our members were happy. However, seeds still needed sowing, crops needed watering and beds needed preparing for new seedlings. As much as this is a learning curve for our members in discovering a new way of connecting with their food, we are also learning to embrace the practicalities of being full-time growers.

This is only the first chapter in what will inevitably be a roller-coaster journey in our first year of CSA production. We hope you like our brand-spanking-new website and everything we have achieved so far. Over the next few weeks we’ll be updating the site and adding plenty of photos of the journey so far.
